As "American Horror Story" season 3 begins filming in New Orleans, a few actresses will be portraying real-life characters, including Angela Bassett as voodoo priestess Marie Laveau.

Who is Marie Laveau, exactly?

According to Wikipedia, Marie Laveau was a Louisiana Creole Voodoo priestess from New Orleans. She was born to a white planter and a free Creole woman of color.

Angela Bassett's character Marie Laveau became a famous priestess and accumulated a large following of many races. What's interesting is that while Marie Laveau is technically a voodoo priestess, many believed her to be and called her a witch.

For "American Horror Story" season 3, cast member Kathy Bates will also play a real-life historical person named Madame Delphine LaLaurie, a socialite who tortured and murdered black slaves.

According to TV Show Auditions, "'American Horror Story: Coven' will center on a family who moves across country after suffering a tragedy. The theme will be witches and witch hunts."

"Jessica Lange will be playing a 'glamor cat' and will be going at it against Academy Award winner Kathy Bates. Bates will portray a woman who, at the start, is Lange's character's best friend, but will become her worst enemy."

In addition, the latest TCA panel unveiled that "American Horror Story" season 3 will have cast members Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson playing mother and daughter, who are most likely witches.

Given all these spoilers, it is likely that "American Horror Story" season 3 will pit Delphine LaLaurie and Marie Laveau against each other as well.
