‘Vampire Diaries’ Season 5 Spoilers: Elena And Caroline Going To College Will Pose Challenges To Characters, Damon Relationship

"Vampire Diaries" season 5 will take place in the fall, with Elena and Caroline heading off to college. Executive producer Julie Plec spills the beans on the challenges that will arise with the college season, especially between Elena and Damon's new relationship.

According to HWHills.com, Plec told Entertainment Weekly that the girls will attend Whitmore College, which is the same college that Aunt Jenna attended. Grams and Shane were also professors at Whitemore.

"We definitely did not want to have it be the college down the block that all of a sudden out of nowhere there's a Mystic Falls University," Plec said, "but we knew we had to keep them close enough to home so that they could come and go as they pleased with a little bit of a road trip."

But this distance will pose a challenge for Elena and Damon's relationship, as Damon will remain in Mystic Falls.

Despite the issue of a long-distance relationship, Plec assured that the college aspect of season 5 will spice up the storyline of "Vampire Diaries."

"It's so fun because you have this whole fresh new story at college, in the midst of which Damon has to show up there to solve a problem or Elena has to rush home to solve a problem or Caroline comes home for a holiday, so I think that we will have conquered the college curse pretty well," Plec said.

Plec also mentioned that Damon and Elena will part ways (physically) on a good foot, since they spent a very satisfying summer together.

"Damon and Elena have been having hot lovin' sex," Plec said of the couple's summer, IB Times reports.

"The biggest hurdles in their relationship come from external sources, people, ideas, notions that are trying to say they're not supposed to be together," Plec teased to EW. "It's really going to be more about them fighting to prove that they should be together and it's okay."
