Who Pays for dates?  It's a question that confounds men and women in heterosexual relationships based on the gender binary. 

Who Pays for dates?  Not knowing the answer to this question can make dating a nervous endeavor.  Now that there is no one accepted answer to who pays for dates, a man may wonder whether a woman really is okay with going dutch.  If he accepts her money, will she judge him? He may feel taken advantage of by a woman who expects to be paid for on dates, and rant on Craigslist about dinner whores.

Dating itself is a recent construct.  It was not so long ago that marriage was often an arranged economic transaction.  The advent of the automobile allowed adolescents more freedom and expanded the idea of dating.  At the time, who pays for dates was settled.  Etiquette manuals of the time show that young men were expected to pay for dates.  Young women were encouraged to carry "mad money" in case something went wrong and they had to call themselves a cab. 

Feminism and the sexual revolution changed many things about dating culture, including who pays for dates.  New technologies such as birth control changed male female relations, including dating. 

A study recently looked at the modern conundrum of who pays for dates, surveyed 17,000 people on the topic of who pays for dates.  The study found that 84 percent of men and 58 percent of women said guys men for most expenses during dating.

Although 57 percent of women settled the question of who pays for dates by offering to split expenses, 39 percent said they secretly hoped they'd have that offer refused and 44 percent said they were a little bothered by men assuming they'd chip in.

44 percent of men said they would stop dating a woman who expected to have everything paid for her, and 64 percent said they felt guilty taking a woman's money.
