Liam Payne Is A Hero: One Direction Singer Saves Friend Andy Samuel From Fire; Sister Tweets His Condition Is Stable

Liam Payne is being called a hero after he saved his friend Andy Samuel from a fire that erupted in Liam's apartment Monday night.

Andy Samuel was engulfed in flames when a patio heater he was filling up exploded, The Mirror reports. He suffered 20% burns to his chest, legs and arms and was last night in intensive care.

Samuels' girlfriend Daisie Smith updated fans on his condition on Twitter. Smith tweeted: "Thank you so much for all of your lovely messages & prayers.On behalf of Andy's family & I we'd like you to know he is in a stable condition"

Andy Samuel's stepdad Matthew Baker explained how Liam leapt into action when the fire occurred, The Mirror reports.

"We are so grateful to Liam because he saved his life," Baker said.

"The lantern just exploded as Andy was lighting it and it took the full force of the flames. Liam helped him by beating out the flames and dousing him with water. He acted quickly and swiftly.

"What happened was absolutely awful. My son is very poorly. I've spoken to Liam on the phone and he told me exactly what happened. He is very shocked himself. It's bad enough but it could have been a lot worse."

Andy's sister Harriet, 12, also thanked the One Direction singer for his heroic move.

"I want to thank Liam for saving my brother," she said, The Mirror reports.

Liam was in the kitchen of his apartment in Canary Wharf, East London, when the blast happened. The fire destroyed 80% of his balcony. It took 35 firefighters 45 minutes to put the fire out, BBC reports.

A spokesman for Liam Payne said he was unharmed.

One Direction fans took to Twitter to wish Andy a speedy recovery, and to share their gratitude of Liam Payne's quick reaction that saved his friend's life.

"Dear Andy, I hope you get better soon! I'm happy Liam helped you put out the fire, but I hope you get out of the hospital okay #prayforandy" a fan tweeted, according to Unreality TV.

Another posted: "I really hope Andy and Liam okay. I know there are other people in the fire but Andy is in the hospital... #prayforandy"
