Android 4.4 KitKat Release Date, Specs, Rumor Round-Up..."Key Lime Pie" Gets Chocolate Twist From Google

In a surprise move, the odd new name of Android 4.4 KitKat has been announced.

Thanks to a Google+ posting from Sundar Pichai, we know the name, first of all, KitKat, a.k.a. Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.

Nobody is sure of what the new Android 4.4 KitKat release will bring, but Google has a lot in the works. Here is a roundup of all the rumors of new Android 4.4 KitKat release date and features.

The new Nexus 7 Tablet has been announced by Google, which will run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The Nexus 5 and Nexus 10 will introduce 4.4 KitKat soon.

At the Google's I/O developer conference, we thought the as Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie would be unveiled, much like during last year's I/O for Jelly Bean. However, we didn't find out much...and now we know that the OS in question is Android 4.4 KitKat.

A highly cited "trusty internal source" sasy that that Key Lime Pie will be another two- to four months before release with Google hoping to give device manufacturers more time to roll out Jelly Bean.

This may be a smart move, as Android is often criticized for shipping devices with outdated operating systems that aren't updated.

Android 4.4 and Android 5.0 may be different products altogether....but the alphabetical naming system means that KitKate may have replaced Key Lime Pie.

As for a release date, the Google will likely use the Google Nexus 5 and Google Nexus 11 tablets and use the devices to run Android 4.4 KitKat. We suspect that these will arrive around the end of October or possibly early November. So we can thus expect KitKat then.

There also may be a Nexus 5 smartphone to replace the Nexus 4. LG is expected to manufacture the device.

Rumored specs include great features like a 5- or 5.2in full-HD screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.3GHz, and 3GB of RAM. Either 16-, 32- or 64GB of storage may be included, along with a 16Mp Nikon camera. Oh, and, of course, Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Nexus 11 will probably be the first tablet to ship with Android 4.4 KitKa. Then, the update will be rolled out to Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets.
