Prince Andrew "Grateful" Buckingham Palace Apology After Security Guards Fail To Recognize, Confront In Gardens

Buckingham Palace didn't recognize Prince Andrew earlier this week, and two guards challenged him in a tense moment in the Gardens.

Scotland Yard confirmed it had stopped the Duke of York. Of course, they've apologized profusely, and Prince Andrew said he was "grateful" for the apology.

It's been a long week at Buckingham Palace-two days before, a man was arrested for burglary inside the Palace, and one was later arrested on the grounds. Thus, guards had likely amped up their vigilance.

In a statement, Prince Andrew said the he acknowledged that the guards have a difficult job and sometimes they "get it wrong".

The duke said: "The police have a difficult job to do balancing security for the Royal Family and deterring intruders, and sometimes they get it wrong.

"I am grateful for their apology and look forward to a safe walk in the garden in the future."

No weapons were drawn in the incident, despite earlier reports that officers pointed their guns on the Prince, saying to "put your hands up and get on the ground" after mistaking him for an intruder and not recognizing him.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said, "In light of media reports we can confirm that the man spoken to by officers was the Duke of York. We are making this public with HRH's permission.

"We are grateful to the duke for his understanding and have apologized for any inconvenience caused."

On Monday, a man was arrested at Buckingham Palace on suspicion of burglary, trespass, and criminal damage. He scaled a fence and got inside the palace. A second man was arrested outside Buckingham Palace on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary.

"A review of the specific circumstances of this incident is being carried out," a Met spokesman said.
