Buckingham Palace Guards Fail To Recognize Prince Andrew, Challenged His Identity In Gardens; ‘Sometimes They Get It Wrong,’ He Says

Buckingham Palace police failed to recognize Prince Andrew in the gardens of the palace, and challenged his identity. The Buckingham Palace guards have since apologized to Prince Andrew. This incident comes just two days after two men were arrested for trespassing and a burglary incident at Buckingham Palace.

In a statement, Prince Andrew said the police had a difficult job and sometimes they "get it wrong," BBC News reports.

Scotland Yard confirmed it had stopped the prince and said the force had "apologized for any inconvenience".

Prince Andrew said: "The police have a difficult job to do balancing security for the Royal Family and deterring intruders, and sometimes they get it wrong.

"I am grateful for their apology and look forward to a safe walk in the garden in the future."

Police said no weapons were drawn in the incident involving the duke, who is the Queen's second son and has an apartment and office at Buckingham Palace, BBC News reports, despite The Sunday Express reporting earlier that the guards had pointed their guns at Prince Andrew and ordered him to "put your hands up and get on the ground" after mistaking him for an intruder.

The Express said an internal inquiry into the incident was being carried out, but the palace has made no comment.

"We are grateful to the duke for his understanding and have apologized for any inconvenience caused," the Metropolitan Police said in a statement, BBC News reports.

The Metropolitan Police are still investigating the incident Monday night in which at least one man scaled a security fence to gain entry to the palace, CNN writes.

One man was arrested for burglary, trespass and criminal damage, police said.

The man was found inside the palace in an area open to the public during the day, police said. The second man was arrested for alleged conspiracy to commit burglary.

The incident has prompted a review of security at Buckingham Palace, CNN reports.

Buckingham Palace is the best known of the Queen's three official residences, BBC News reports.
