Dodgers pitching coach Rick Honeycutt has been working with the veteran right-hander on a number of tweaks, like moving him from the first-base side of the rubber to the third-base side in an attempt to provide better deception. Volquez has also worked on keeping a direct line to home plate, instead of spinning off toward first.
"I was doing everything they wanted me to do," Volquez told MLB.com after his first start with L.A. "I've got to execute pitches, keep the ball down."
Juan Uribe had a career-high three homers and Los Angeles (84-59) totaled six in Monday's 8-1 series-opening win to end a four-game slide. It was the most homers hit by the Dodgers since connecting for seven on Sept. 18, 2006, and Uribe's sixth career four-hit game, according to the Associated Press.
"He's a great guy and one of the guys that we all look to in the clubhouse," first baseman Adrian Gonzalez told the AP. "I know he's taken his share of blows over the last two years, so it's great that he's having a good year and he's been a big part of what we've done."
