Why YG Doesn't Need the Number 1 Spot

YG Entertainment is one of the greatest entertainment companies. So why aren't they chasing the #1 spot?

Most solo artists and groups target the top spot of music programs when they release a new album. They rush TV appearances, music video releases, and music program performances in order to appeal as much as they can to the fans to vote them into the number 1 spot. G-Dragon and YG has employed a completely different strategy, however. It's a strategy that doesn't account for that number 1 spot.

G-Dragon revealed 5 songs from his album on September 2nd and followed it up on the 7th by releasing 7 more songs. He will release his full album with exclusive tracks on the 13th. He performed on the 6th on "Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook" and on the 8th on "Inkigayo". He released 4 title songs - "WHO YOU," "Niliria," "Crooked," and "Black." Three of the four title songs hit the top spot on online music charts.

G-Dragon's decision to have so many songs released as title tracks has piqued much interest in the album release. YG released information on the 10th that 300,000 albums were preordered. At least two to three songs from G-Dragon's new album is on the top 10 lists of online charts.

However, this is a very ineffective strategy if one is gunning for a top spot in the music programs. Two week old data is not incorporated into the criteria of voting for the first place in the music programs. That is, G-Dragon will hit the highest mark in their first week, but will not hit higher marks in the weeks to come because all the title songs have been released at once.

Experts believe that YG Entertainment is no longer tied down to achieving the number 1 spot on music charts. Their position as producers of international superstars has already surpassed that need. YG stated, "Even without taking the number 1 spot, G-Dragon's physical album is pre-ordered nationwide for 300,000 pieces in a national music market dominated by online album sales. When international album sales are accounted for, G-Dragon might become the highest selling Korean Pop artist in Korea. He may stand tall among a few handful of solo male artists who are capable of that feat."
