The Colbert Report Snags Two Emmys, Daily Show Snubbed: Is Colbert Surpassing Jon Stewart As America's Favorite Fake News Anchor?

"The Colbert Report" won its first Emmy at the 2013 Emmy Awards Sunday night, ending the 10-year winning streak of "The Daily Show." Is Stephen Colbert surpassing his former boss Jon Stewart?

"The Colbert Report" won the Best Variety Show category for the first time, snagging the Emmy from "The Daily Show," which has won the Emmy in the category for the last 10 years, making it the longest winning streak in TV history, E! Online reports.

Earlier in the evening, "The Colbert Report" also won the Emmy for Best Writing in a Variety Series, the third time its won in that category since the show started.

Stephen Colbert, who used to work on "The Daily Show," only had sweet words for Jon Stewart: "I personally have to thank my friend and my brother, Jon Stewart, who said 'We should do a show together where you're a professional idiot,'" Colbert said.

He continued, "Jon never told me how good this feels, actually."

According to The NY Daily News, Colbert said of Stewart backstage: "Winning best show is a lot of fun, but second to none in my mind is the belief that Jon deserved all those wins.

"No one is a bigger fan of Jon Stewart than I am," he added. "I learned from him how to write satirical comedy. And he's still there for me. I can call him anytime and ask for ideas and moral support or just the energy to do 160 shows a year."

Stewart is also an executive producer on "The Colbert Report."

So is Colbert surpassing Stewart as America's favorite fake news anchor? Colbert doesn't seem to think so - he attributed part of the reason for his win to the fact that Stewart took a hiatus from "The Daily Show" over the summer to shoot a film.

"I'm grateful Jon took the summer off during the voting period," he joked. "Not that John Oliver didn't do the greatest job ever, but maybe that helped. I don't know."

Colbert joked during his second acceptance speech of the night: "As I said before, it's a cliché to say it's an honor just to be nominated, but it's more than that. It's also a lie. This is way better."

While this was an occasion to celebrate, Colbert also experienced hardship this year. Earlier this year, his mother, Lorna Tuck Colbert, passed away at the age of 92.

"I want to thank my mom for not worrying about me and believing that I'd be okay," Colbert said as he held the Emmy in his hand Sunday.
