"Any time you can throw 17 scoreless up against a team like that, it's a credit to our starters," said Balfour, whose scoreless ninth inning enabled him to claim the win in Game 2 when catcher Stephen Vogt drilled a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth.
Detroit could have taken the first two of this best-of-three series, though they are happy to have at least split.
"It would have been nice to take two in Oakland," Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter told MLB.com. "But they're a Major League ballclub, American League West champions. They're a professional team. We took one of two there, and we'll go home now and see if we can get it rolling."
Monday's pitching matchup is Jarrod Parker is 12-8 with a 3.97 ERA this season vs Anibal Sanchez who is 14-8 with a 2.57 ERA as well as over 200 strikeouts.
Parker will have to deal with reigning A.L. MVP and Triple-Crown winner Miguel Cabrera. In five at bats, Miggy has three hits with three RBI as well as one walk. Cabrera has been dealing with a nagging leg injury of late, though he is still a feared-hitter.
"The guy is dangerous regardless, and no matter if he has his legs under him or not," A's manager Bob Melvin told MLB.com. "He hits the ball hard up the middle, as he has both games. And you're always thinking about where he is in the lineup."
