Luna Eclipse October 2013: [VIDEO] Penumbral Eclipse Of Full Moon Tonight- Watch Streaming

A lunar eclipse will occur tonight, on October 18, 2013. The full moon will briefly plunge into Earth's shadow tonight, producing a lunar eclipse. The lunar eclipse will be visible to backyard astronomers and stargazers throughout the world-from Africa to Europe, as well as in western Asia and the eastern parts of North and South America.

The moon will pass in to Earth's penumbra, or outer shadow. During the penumbral lunar eclipse, the moon Southern part of the moon will be darkened by shadow for roughly four hours with the time of deepest eclipse, which will occur at 7:50 p.m. EDT (2350 GMT).

While the shading will be subtle, keen eyes will see that the Earth's shadow will cover 76.5 percent of the moon.

The online Slooh Space Camera will broadcast live video of the moon going into hiding for the entire four-hour eclipse starting at 2:45 p.m. EDT (1845 GMT). Slooh's team of experts will join the show at 7:30 p.m. EDT (2330 GMT) to chime in as the during the eclipse reaches its peak.

"Although a penumbral lunar eclipse might go unnoticed by someone casually glancing at the moon, we will be able to observe the gradual shading of the moon in the live images Slooh will broadcast throughout the eclipse," Slooh's Paul Cox said to press in a statement. "The shading becomes far more apparent when viewed as a time-lapse, and we'll show viewers that during the live segment of the show."

Unfortunately, folks living in the Western portion of the U.S. won't be able to see much, so they might want to watch it online. The eclipse will occur while it's still daylight on the West Coast, in the late afternoon. On the East Coast, however, the show will start right after sunset.

In Africa, Europe, and Western Asia, the eclipse will occur in the middle of the night and look like a reddish tint on the full moon.
