Miss Universe 2013 Interesting Fact: Who Was The First One To Be Crowned ‘Miss Universe’?

The Miss Universe beauty pageant is undoubtedly the world's most viewed contest. For the past 61 years, delegates all over the world have competed using their beauty, wit, and intelligence.

The first lady to be crowned as Miss Universe was Armi Helena Kuusela who hails from Finland. She won the prestigious title in the 1952 coronation which was held in Long Beach, California. Back then, only 30 contestants have participated the very first pageant.


Kuusela was only 17 when she got the crown. She stands 5 feet 5 inches and weighs 108 pounds. After acquiring the title, she then starred in her own film, "Maailman kaunein tytto" (World's Most Beautiful Girl), with Jack Coleman.


During her reign, she traveled extensively and one of the places she visited was Philippines where she met Filipino businessman Virgilio Hilario. Without waiting for her reign to be over, she married Hilario and relinquished her crown. The couple had 5 children and after Hilario's abrupt death in 1975, the beauty queen remarried American diplomat Albert Williams.

She is currently residing in San Diego, California where she is involved in several charity works. She is likewise active in cancer researches at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institue.
