Celia Cruz Google Doodle Honors Cuban Salsa Legend [VIDEO]; Singer Carried Message Of "Felicidad - Happiness" To Millions As Salsa Hitmaker With Tito Puente

Celia Cruz Google Doodle Remembers Cuban Salsa Star: Celia Cruz, a famous Cuban Salsa singer, would have been 88 years old today, and Google celebrated her birthday with a doodle in her honor.

Celia Cruz is known for songs such as La Negra Tiene Tumbao, and a Google doodle could broaden the reach of her music to a new generation of fans.

Celia Cruz was born Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso to a working-class family in Havana in 1925.  Celia Cruz took up singing as a child, and her aunt introduced her to the world of Cuba's nightclubs. She became a student at Cuba's Conservatory of Music. Her career took off in 1950 when she joined La Sonora Matancera, a prominent dance orchestra in Cuba.

Celia Cruz talked with the New York Times before her passing about the feelings involved in her music: ""When people hear me sing, I want them to be happy, happy, happy. I don't want them thinking about when there's not any money, or when there's fighting at home. My message is always felicidad - happiness."

"Ten years after her passing, it is incredible how 'alive' she still is. Her voice and image are present everywhere and her impact on culture worldwide is immeasurable", said Nelson Albareda, CEO of Eventus, praising the Google doodle. "Celia continues to bring joy and enrich the lives of so many globally. We are grateful to Google for our collaboration in assuring that her legacy continues to reach new fans around the world."
