Jim Leyland barely held back tears as he announced his decision to step down as Detroit Tigers' manager.

The manager of the Detroit Tigers said he always knew he would quit "when it's time." This morning Jim Leyland announced that "it's time" and stepped down as manager of the Detroit Tigers.

Jim Leyland said "The fuel's getting a little low."

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that Jim Leyland told the Detroit Tigers that he was stepping down as manager on Saturday night. Leyland told the team on the flight back to Detroit after American League Championship Series. Jim Leyland said "they clapped" when he told them, but he wasn't sure what that meant. After six games, The Detroit Tigers lost to the Boston Red Sox.

Jim Leyland has been the Detroit Tigers manager since 2006. Under his leadership, the Tigers won two American League pennants, took three division titles and went to the playoffs four times.

Jim Leyland's overall record during 22 seasons is 1,769-1,728. Leyland's record with the Tigers is 700-597. Leyland will turn 69 in December, but he said "I'm not totally retiring today. I'm just not going to be in the dugout anymore."
