Daylight Saving Time Ends Nov. 3: Which States Won’t Get An Extra Hour Of Sleep On Sunday Night?

Daylight saving time ends in the United States on November 3 at 2 am. Daylight saving time affects most states in the United States, but which states won't get an extra hour of sleep on Sunday night when daylight saving time ends?

The federal government does not require U.S. states or territories to observe Daylight Saving Time, The Examiner reports.

In fact, "residents of Arizona (except for residents of the Navajo Indian Reservation), Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Marianas Islands won't need to change their clocks this weekend," reports National Geographic on Oct. 28, 2013.

This means residents in these states won't get to appreciate an extra hour of sleep on Sunday night.

Daylight Saving Time ended in Europe and the Middle East last week, while in the southern hemisphere, Daylight Saving Time just began in in Brazil, Chile, Australia, and New Zealand earlier this month when their clocks went forward, The Examiner reports.

Historically, Benjamin Franklin is often credited with the idea of Daylight Saving Time, while on a trip to Paris in 1784, he discovered that he could save more candles.

In the United States, Daylight Saving Time was closely related to both World Wars and the attempt to conserve energy and resources.

The United States instituted Daylight Saving Time with the Standard Time Act of 1918, The Examiner reports.

Some say Daylight Saving Time adds an extra hour of daylight during the summer months, encouraging outdoor activities and saving energy indoors.

Meanwhile, opponents to Daylight Saving Time argue that the change in time during the beginning and end of Daylight Saving Time has harmful effects on "our circadian body clocks," which confuses people's travel schedules. In fact, some studies show that the energy saved in the summer by the extended hour is actually negated by using more energy during the dark early morning hour, The Examiner reports.
