Nexus 7 VS. iPad Mini 2012 Version: Google And Apple’s Flagship 7-inch Tablets Compared In Key Specs; Which Slate Would You Buy?

Nexus 7 vs. iPad Mini 2012: 7-inch tablets from two of the leading tech giants today. The Android-powered Nexus 7 and the iOS 7-powered KitKat, which of these devices would you choose? We compare their display and design, CPU and RAM, camera specs, battery life and price in this comparison.

Display & Design
According to the International Business Times, the Nexus 7 2 comes with a 7-inch LED-backlit IPS display with a resolution of 1200 x 1920 pixels. The iPad Mini, on the other hand, comes with a 7.9-inch LED backlit IPS LCD and has a resolution of 768 x 1024 pixels.

Dimensions of the Nexus 7.2 is 200 x 114 x 8.7 mm and weighs 290 grams. The dimensions of the iPad Mini is at 200 x 134.7 x 7.2 mm and weighs 308 grams.

CPU and RAM
In a review by Trusted Reviews, it noted that the iPad Mini has an Apple A5 dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A9, 512MB RAM while the Nexus 7 2 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5GHz Krait with 2 GB RAM.

The review site noted that the Nexus 7 2 has a far more powerful CPU than the iPad Mini’s dual-core processor. Apple’s 7-inch tablet is slightly underpowered and is not even as up to date in processor than the first Nexus 7.

The 2013 edition Nexus 7 2 has more RAM than the iPad Mini, but the Apple tablet have more impressive-looking apps.

Camera Specs
The iPad Mini has a 5-megapixel main camera and 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera. The Nexus 7 2 has a 5-megapixel main camera and 1.2 megapixel front-facing. Technically, both units have the same specs.

Trusted Reviews noted that the Nexus 7 2’s front camera is a little askew, located at the right side of the screen rather than dead-centre. The iPad Mini’s front camera is in the centre of the screen bezel, which seems more sensible, said the tech review site.

Battery Life
In a test by LAPTOP Mag, the iPad Mini lasted 10 hours and 33 minutes, while the Nexus 7 2 lasted 8 hours and 26 minutes. The test included continuous web surfing via Wi-Fi at 40 per cent brightness.

Price
A quick look at Apple.com shows that the Space Gray and Silver edition units of the iPad Mini is being offered for $299. The price is for the Wi-Fi edition with 16GB storage. The Nexus 7 2, 16GB black variant and Wi-Fi only is tagged $229. Some holiday specials like the one offered by Staples.com (still valid at the time of this writing) shows the Nexus 7 2 available for $199.
