Orange Is The New Black Actress Laverne Cox Tells Television Host Katie Couric To Stop 'Objectifying Transgender People'

Netflix's dark comedy drama Orange is the New Black has been making a lot of noise lately. There's the Golden Globe nominations for Taylor Schilling for Best actress, People''s Choice Award for Favorite Streaming Series, Satellite Awards for Best Television Series - Musical or Comedy, and a whole lot more.

While the whole has been a huge success, one of its actress is in a battle of her own. In an interview with Katie Couric of ABC News, transgender actress Laverne Cox had boldly expressed his opinion about objectifying of transgender.

Couric asked Cox about his genitalia.

"Your private parts are different now, aren't they?" the host asked.

However, the Orange is the New Black actor said she's not comfortable with it and immediately let the host know. Cox found the question invasive saying she doesn't want to talk about it because it is 'very personal.'

I do feel there is a preoccupation with that. The preoccupation with transition and surgery objectifies trans people. And then we don't get to really deal with the real lived experiences. The reality of trans people's lives is that so often we are targets of violence. We experience discrimination disproportionately to the rest of the community. Our unemployment rate is twice the national average; if you are a trans person of color, that rate is four times the national average. The homicide rate is highest among trans women. If we focus on transition, we don't actually get to talk about those things.

When we focus on transition," Cox said, "we don't actually get to talk about those things."

Cox has been known as an advocate of transgender rights. Just recently, she co-produced a documentary titled 'Free CeCe.' This project tackles the life of transgender woman CeCe McDonald who was sentenced to 41 months in prison for killing one of the guys who were hurling disriminatory, racist and transphobic attack on her in Minnesota.
