‘Divergent’ Trilogy Ending Elicits Angry Responses From Fans [SPOILERS]; Will Author Veronica Roth Write A New Ending For Movie Adaptation?

While the release of 'Divergent' trilogy's last book 'Allegiant' took place last October, strong responses to Veronica Roth's penned ending still wouldn't stop. Fans of the dystopian series were shocked when the 'Divergent' trilogy ending turned out to be far from a fairytale's "happily ever after". For many, the demise of two pivotal characters in the ending wasn't really necessary.

Despite the barrage of criticisms, Roth defended herself by saying that she had already planned the ending right from the very first book: "I was sure of it from the very beginning, what would do justice to these characters and this story, and I feel very strongly that this is the best possible ending for this book and I'm extremely happy with it even though I know it will be alarming, maybe."

A few weeks after the book's release, the bestselling author of 'Divergent', 'Insurgent', and 'Allegiant' posted a simple and straightforward tweet: "Here is all I'm going to say: strong reader reactions, whether negative or positive, are completely fine with me."

Even 'The Fault in Our Stars' author John Green recognized the reactions of readers and quickly defended how Roth opted to finish the series: "As a reader, I don't feel a story has an obligation to make me happy. I want stories to show me a bigger world than I know."

Followers of the series are still reeling from 'Allegiant's' ending. In Goodreads, a popular sharing site for bookworms, several discussions have surfaced criticizing Roth's last book.

According to a user named Linn, "Allegiant just a leaves a bitter, horrible taste in your mouth and a huge stinging hole in your heart. It was like the motto was 'Life sucks. The end.'"

On the other hand, one forum poster named Sara wished Roth considered her readers before coming up with such kind of ending: "Miss Roth, the value of a person's sacrifice is not defined by how much they lose but by how much they stand to lose. It's the choice that matters, not the results. That is where JK Rowling was right and you were wrong. Oh and next time, please think of your readers. They are, after all, the reason you have a job."

With the intensity of the responses, will Roth and 'Divergent' movie's creative team come up with a different 'Divergent' trilogy ending to fulfill the wishes of the fans?
