Windows 9 Release Date: 2015 Successor Of Windows 8.1 Dubbed ‘Threshold’ Will Start Shipping April 2015; Latest Microsoft OS In Use On Less Than 25 Million PCs

Windows 9 release date: The year just started but Microsoft is already looking forward to 2015 when the new desktop OS of the company, Windows 9 but currently codenamed “Threshold,” would have its April debut. There’s a great sense of urgency on the upcoming OS since Windows 8 is used in less PCs as expected; less than 25 million to be exact according to BGR.

“Windows 8 is tanking harder than Microsoft is comfortable discussing in public, and the latest release, Windows 8.1, which is a substantial and free upgrade with major improvements over the original release, is in use on less than 25 million PCs at the moment,” writes Paul Thurrot, of the website SuperSite for Windows.

According to the technology expert, Windows 9 is Microsoft’s attempt to “airbrush Windows 8 out of public memory” as BGR would describe it. Expected updates on the new OS include fixing the “Metro” design language used by Windows. There is no clear direction on what else would change with the updated OS.

The Windows 9 launch maybe a make or break for Microsoft, especially since sales of PCs has declined by 10 percent. Thurrot noted that “Windows 8 has set back Microsoft, and Windows, by years, and possibly for good.

In a report by the International Business Times, it noted that critics has complained about the Windows 8 for slow functionality and poorly conceived user interface. The device running alongside the platform have also sold poorly against those running Apple’s iOS and OSX and Google’s Android.

Many are expecting Microsoft to announce the upcoming release of Windows 9 at its Build 2014 conference this April, where the company is also expected to disclose the full-feature list of its mobile platform, Windows Phone 8.1.
