Kate Middleton, Prince William Like David Beckham And Victoria Beckham? ‘Celebrities’ Rather Than Royalty, Historian Says Of Prince George’s Parents

Kate Middleton and Prince William are more like David Beckham and Victoria Beckham than the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, according to writer and historian Christopher Lee, who likened Prince George's parents to "celebrities" rather than royalty.

Lee told the Daily Mail that he thinks Kate Middleton, 32, and Prince William, 31, are similar to real-life friends David Beckham and wife Victoria Beckham (who attended their 2011 wedding).

"I don't think they rate with the Beckhams," Lee said when describing the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, "but I put them in that slot."

As they approach middle-age, Kate Middleton and Prince William will be viewed as "nice people but rather dull and inoffensive," Lee said.

He added that Prince George's parents lack the "gravitas" to be the fairy-tale prince and princess we want them to be, E! News reports.

"They love bending down and talking to kids and doing ordinary things," he said. "They are ordinary, but they are celebrities rather than old-fashioned, 'don't ask questions, don't touch me' royalty."

Of baby Prince George, Lee said: "He may have some public role in 50 years' time but I don't think it will be the traditional King of England role."

"Since the Victorians, the royals have had a glamorous and imperial air and I don't think that will exist when William gets to the throne, while Catherine will be not quite mumsy, but dull," he continued.

"I think the gloss is wearing off her now. There's nothing exciting about the couple. And as they approach middle age, the public will get used to a nation of euro-royalty in the Danish, Dutch and Belgian mould - nice people but rather dull and inoffensive."

However, there's one royal that Lee thinks will be great in the future: Prince Charles.

"He will be a much, much better King than any of us believe," Lee said. "Forget about courtiers squeezing his toothpaste for him, this is a very intelligent man who questions the world around him."

Christopher Lee wrote the Radio 4 British history program This Sceptred Isle, E! News reports.
