Creepy Cartoon Theories: Spongebob Squarepants Characters Are Nuclear Testing Victims, The Rugrats Are Dead Babies!

The existence of Creepy Cartoon Theories means that many people believe that cartoons mean more than what they are on the surface. Cartoons such as Spongebob Squarepants and The Rugrats may have darker undertones, more than the laughs that they give us.

One of the theories mentioned is about Spongebob Squarepants. The funny, yellow sponge lives in a pineapple under the sea, with a starfish as his best friend and a crab as his employer. While the premise seems weird, it is a cartoon, and the circumstances were dismissed as part of the creators' imagination.

However, there is actually an explanation for the Spongebob setting.

As a response to the question, "What 'fan theories' have blown your mind with their devastating logic?" a response brought about this theory. From the comment by /u/ Capmaster on Reddit: "The existence of Spongebob and his strange friends is the result of radiation from nuclear arms testing that was performed on the Bikini Atoll in the late 40's and early 50's. Since they live under the atoll, the town is known as 'Bikini Bottom'."

The idea was investigated and expanded upon by Cracked.com: SpongeBob and his friends look and act the way they do because of their exposure to the radiation from atomic bombs dropped in the area around Bikini Bottom, where the show is set.
First of all, the fact that a talking sponge lives in a place called Bikini Bottom isn't some roundabout reference to human contraception -- the show is set under a real place called Bikini Atoll, which is confirmed by the official Nickelodeon-written synopsis. And here's where it gets interesting: Back in 1946, the U.S. government detonated a couple of atomic bombs there, one of which was set off underwater. The characters were normal sea creatures until the radiation from the explosion mutated them into sentient freaks. Even the landscape changed, allowing giant pineapples to grow out of the ground. Not only does this theory make sense, but it also provides answers to a lot of previously unanswered questions that have baffled fans for years."

There are also other roots for Cartoon Theories. The idea that figments of the imagination can be presented as real is something you would not expect from cartoons. However, the theory about The Rugrats presents the exact idea.
The first known credit for this theory was Creepypasta: "The Rugrats really were a figment of Angelica's imagination. Chuckie died a long time ago along with this mother; that's why Chaz is a nervous wreck all the time. Tommy was a stillborn; that's why Stu is constantly in the basement making toys for the son who never had a chance to live. The DeVilles had an abortion. Angelica couldn't figure whether it would be a boy or a girl, thus creating the twins."

The dispute for this theory is that the children also interact with other characters, albeit minimal. As always, theories are fan-made explanations that may or may not be plausible. In the case of Spongebob, there is a possibility that the creators actually intended to do drive an anti-nuclear message. It is always more fun to try and figure it out, though.
