'Green Acres' Actress Mary Grace Canfield Dies; Funny and Enduring Comedy Character Actress Was 89

"Green Acres" actress Mary Grace Canfield, died on Saturday at the age of89. The TV star's daughter Phoebe Alexiades said her mother died of lung cancer at a hospice in Santa Barbara, Calif..

Mary Grace Canfield is best-known for her role as the carpenter Ralph Monroe on the sixties sitcom "Green Acres." Canfield's career spanned almost four decades.

The actress also appeared on "General Hospital," "The Love Boat" and "The Hathaways." Canfield played Harriet Kravitz on four episodes of the 1960s series "Bewitched."

Mary Grace Canfield was born in Rochester, N.Y. She chose acting school over college and appeared on o Broadway before moving to Los Angeles for TV and film roles. Besides Green Acres, Canfield went on a blind date with Gomer Pyle, played by the late Jim Nabors, in "The Andy Griffith Show" in 1963.

Canfield played in the films "Pollyanna" and the horror classic "Something Wicked This Way Comes."

Canfield played Ralph Monroe in about 40 episodes of "Green Acres."

She wore painters' overall and greeted folks in the town of Hooterville with a happy "howdy doody." Ralph and her brother Alf, were fixing the Douglas family's bedroom forever.

Eddie Albert was Oliver Wendell Douglas in the CBS television series Green Acres. Eva Gabor was his wife who said goodbye to city life. The popular comedy ran from 1965 to 1971.

Mary Grace Canfield is survived by her husband, John Bischof; two daughters and three grandsons.
