The Stars kicked off a three-game homestand Tuesday with a 3-2 shootout win over Nashville. Vernon Fiddler and Tyler Seguin scored goals in the tiebreaker to give Dallas its fourth straight win at home, where it is 7-0-1 in its last eight.
"It's huge. Obviously, you're scoreboard watching," Fiddler told ESPN.com. "We saw Phoenix picked up a point so we wanted to do anything we could to pick up any kind of points. It's a big two points."
Kari Lehtonen turned aside 27 shots through overtime and improved to 6-0-0 with a 1.90 GAA in his last seven home starts.
While Dallas won, Phoenix fell in overtime to the Blue Jackets. That loss helped Dallas jump into the second wild card spot over the Coyotes.
"I didn't say anything. I don't know if the players were aware of [the Coyotes' overtime loss] or not," coach Lindy Ruff said. "We just focused on what we could do. The schedule is demanding and it gets a little bit worse tomorrow. I'm a little concerned that our energy was good early and the energy began just slipping away. Shifts were getting really short."
It was Ryan Johansen's 32nd goal at 3:33 of overtime last night to give the Blue Jackets an extra huge point. Columbus also trails the Red Wings by one point for the first wild card spot.
"It means so much more if we get in the postseason and do some damage there," Johansen said of his game-winner.
