Project Ara Phone: Specs Of Upcoming Google Modular Phone Include Toshiba-Made Micro-Processors, Tipped Pricing Still At $50

Project Ara phone: Since the modular phone concept broke out during the last quarter of last year, a lot of people have already discounted it as merely a dream smartphone. However, when Motorola launched the Project Ara campaign, more than just a few eyebrows rose. And when Google announced that it will be taking over the modular phone project following Motorola's sale to Lenovo, we see ourselves eager with excitement.

A couple of months ago, Google reported that the device will come in a variety of sizes, each having a specific number of modules which can be attached to the base phone.

So what's the latest news about Project Ara?

According to a report by Android Authority, known leaker Nikkei reported that Google may be looking at Toshiba as its primary supplier of microprocessors for the modular phone. But that does go directly contrary to Project Ara's concept of being a smartphone that can run different modules or 'parts' from different manufacturers?

In the report, Toshiba may have been tapped to work on microprocessors for the modular smartphone, but it does not mean that the Chinese electronics company would be working on solely on Project Ara's actual processor. As mentioned in the report, there will be a lot of processors in the device, especially in those areas where modules would be snapped in place.

For instance, the module for a camera sensor would not work at all if the area where it would be placed does not have a processor to facilitate with the transfer of data from the camera module to other parts of the base phone.

In the report, Nikkei also mentioned that the pricing for Google's Project Ara smartphone will still begin at $50, which could potentially make it the cheapest smartphone in the market.
