"The Legend of Korra" has officially transitioned to the web, and it seems season 3 episode 9 is jam-packed with revelations.

In this episode, the motives behind the Red Lotus is finally revealed as "The Legend of Korra" takes a more serious turn.

“We’re part of a secret society dedicated to restoring freedom to the world. We are what the White Lotus was meant to be, but after the 100 year war the White Lotus lost its true purpose,” said Zaheer in season 3 episode 9, titled "The Stakeout."

In this episode, it is revealed that Unalaq was once a part of the Red Lotus, and helped the group in its attempted kidnapping of Korra when she was a child.

“Unalaq becoming the Dark Avatar was never part of our mission. I want what you want: to restore balance to this word. You kept the Spirit Portals opened, but why stop there? The idea of having nations and governments is as foolish as keeping the human and Spirit Worlds separate. You’ve had to deal with a moronic president and a tyrannical queen. Don’t you think the world would be better off if leaders like them were eliminated? It wasn’t too long ago that the Airbenders were nearly all wiped out thanks to the Fire Lord’s desire for world dominance. True freedom can only be achieved when oppressive governments are torn down. The natural order is disorder."

In this episode, "The Legend of Korra" season 3 also presumably had its first death with Aiwei, a mole for the Red Lotus in Zaofu. After being deemed a loose end by Zaheer, Aiwei was thrown inside the Fog of Lost Souls.

Some viewers seemed rather disappointed in this turn of event.
