'Doom 4' Release Date, Beta, Trailer, Gameplay: Bethesda Talks About Resurrecting And Rebooting Franchise And Getting Back To Fast Paced Shooter Roots, Jet Packs Seen In Quake Con Trailer [VIDEO]

"Doom 4" is coming, here is everything known at the moment.

Bethesda recognizes that they have an uphill battle ahead of them with "Doom 4." Vice president of PR and marketing Pete Hines acknowledged in a new interview that they won't get a "free pass" from the public.

"We view that similarly to Wolfenstein," Hines told MCV (via TotalXbox). "Because it's been so long since the last Doom game. We are going in as if we need to prove ourselves all over again. We have no free passes. Nobody will assume this is going to be awesome."

Doom 3 was released in 2004. That game, in turn, ended a seven-year hiatus from the series. While DOOM was once "the" shooter series back in the mid-nineties, it's now just a memory for many gamers. Younger shooter fans, meanwhile, haven't played a DOOM game at all."

"Wolfenstein" recently proved the concept of resurecting old franchises. "Wolfenstein," fell off gamers' radars due to years of neglect. However, subsidiary Machine Games released Wolfenstein: The New Order this May to solid reviews. Here is my review of Wolfenstein, which you should read, because I nailed it.

"Let's be honest, it was a bit of a tarnished brand," Hines said about "Wolfenstein." "And we knew that. The last couple of games were either 'ok' or 'not great'. It wasn't a franchise where people were desperate for the next one. Wolfenstein isn't Uncharted. We knew this would take some explaining. But developer Machine Games has now untarnished the IP."

Now it's id Software's turn to resurrect Doom. After years of development (production began back in 2008), they unveiled Doom 4 during QuakeCon 2014.

"We are going to have to prove that this is something that's going to be fun and different that you need to pay attention to. That has to be our default position, we can't be: 'It's Doom, of course you're going to play it'. But that just makes us work harder."

Bethesda has released a teaser trailer for the new 'Doom 4' game during the QuakeCon event on July 17. The game, as it turns out, won't be called 'Doom 4', but will actually be a reboot of the original game that first popularized the first-person shooter genre.

The original storyline for the first game was set on Mars, where a portal to hell was accidentally opened during an experiment. The protagonist must now take up arms and run down the demons he encounters.

One of the most endearing features of the original game was its fast-paced guns-blazing action. Executive producer Marty Stratton said that the game would be returning to its roots which made it popular in the first place; a game with fast-action, run-and-gun, inventive and creative combat. During the reveal at QuakeCon, gameplay footage was shown and there was a lot of strafing and running around, much like in the original game. New features such as jetpacks were also shown, putting emphasis on finding higher ground, up and away from the hordes of enemies below. You can see that footage below.

The game is currently being developed on the new id Tech 6 engine, which is supposedly going to support 1080p full HD 60fps gameplay.

There are no exact dates as to when the game will be released, but there is speculation that it will see an early 2015 release for the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and the PC.

"We are going in as if we need to prove ourselves all over again," said Hines.  "We have no free passes. Nobody will assume this is going to be awesome. We are going to have to prove that this is something that's going to be fun and different that you need to pay attention to. That has to be our default position, we can't be: 'It's Doom, of course you're going to play it. But that just makes us work harder," concluded Hines.

What do you think, will the newest Doom live up to its forebearers?
