Kyrie Irving Vs Damian Lillard For The Final Point Guard Spot In Team USA! Cleveland Star Is Coach K's Protege But Blazers' Star Is Better At Crunch Time! Who Will Make The Final Cut?

Team USA has a wealth of point guards. With Derrick Rose and Stephen Curry locked in and John Wall locked out, the third and final point guard slot boils down to two Rookie of the Year awardees: Kyrie Irving and Damian Lillard.

As mentioned, both players won the Rookie of the Year plum so no one questions their talent. Irving has been the go-to-guy for the Cleveland Cavaliers since he started his career in 2011 but that will definitely change in the upcoming season now that LeBron James is back home.

Damian Lillard had an impressive rookie year but many would still count his ROY win as "by default" because of Anthony Davis' injury. But Lillard doesn't seem to be bothered with that, or anything for that matter.

ESPN evaluated the point guards of Team USA and their chances to make the team:

"Kyrie Irving
The sight of Irving starting opposite Rose in the intrasquad scrimmage was the latest indication that he has a spot sewn up. He can't yet make the defensive impact Wall could have, and isn't quite as flammable offensively as a locked-in Damian Lillard, but USA Basketball regards Irving as a big part of this going forward. Hard to see Coach K leaving him home in those circumstances."

Kyrie Irving's affinity to Coach K and how he flourishes in the offensive system almost makes him an easy pick to take the final "one" slot. But his weakness is actually Damian Lillard's strength.

"Damian Lillard
It's not inconceivable that Krzyzewski could keep all four of these guys after letting Wall go, especially given Lillard's aforementioned flammability as a shooter. But four lead guards on a roster of 12 could well be one too many. If so, Lillard losing out to Irving -- one of Coach K's longtime faves -- is the safest forecast."

"Uncle Drew" is a spectacular player but he has never been to the NBA playoffs. Thus, his reactions in crucial situations (if Team USA ever gets itself in a bind) is not exactly reliable. In contrast, Lillard thrives in pressure situations. Bill Simmons of Grantland claimed in his BS Report podcast:

"If I had an all-testicles team, Damian Lillard would be the point guard." One of the strong cases for that is his series winning shot against the Houston Rockets at the buzzer.

However, even if Lillard makes it, he would not be the starting point guard and it's unlikely that he will be the one in charge if Team USA is in a close game. That would belong to veterans Derrick Rose or Stephen Curry.

The final roster is expected to be named later this week. Who do you think will make it?
