Alonzo Mourning Enters Basketball Hall Of Fame! Is He The Best Miami Heat Player Of All Time? Who Can Top Him?

Alonzo Mourning was one of the stalwarts of the Miami Heat. He was recently inducted to the Hall Of Fame. But he will probably be upstaged by an active player as the best Miami Heat player of all time.

Miami Heat player Dwyane Wade, one of the team's own draft picks, has already exceeded Mourning's points with the team. The fact that Wade was there when the team won all three titles in their history will also strengthen his case.

But this moment belongs to Alonzo Mourning, second overall pick of the Charlotte Hornets in 1992 (Shaquille O' Neal was first overall). He made his mark in Miami, though. He shared choice words with ESPN:

"I'm not going into the Hall of Fame alone. I'm really taking in so many people that helped contribute to my well-being, not just as a professional athlete but as a person. I'm very thankful for the opportunities, and how each of those individuals gave me a piece of themselves throughout my life."

"When you think about my career as a whole, I've lived a storybook life. When you think about all of the obstacles I had to overcome." Mourning was raised in a foster home, and acknowledged the father figure in his life, Georgetown Coach John Thompson. His son will also attend Georgetown.

On Thompson: "He taught me more about life than he did about basketball. He treated me more like a son than he did a basketball [player]. He truly gave a part of himself to make sure I turned out all right."

Perhaps Mourning's greatest feat as a player was being able to return to the Miami Heat after a Kidney transplant in 2003. He recalls how coach Pat Riley was an integral part of building his competitive spirit that drove him to return:

"No coach has been better at channeling my will to win, at bringing out every ounce of everything I had in me as a competitor. He literally drove me to this point. That's all part of my DNA now, because of Pat Riley."

'Zo Mourning will be one of the greatest pillars of the Miami Heat and the NBA itself. He truly deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
