Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini Review: Specs Of Android Jelly Bean Smartphone Incl. 4” Display, NovaThor Dual-Core Processor, 1 GB RAM, Up To 16 GB Internal Memory; Is It Another Mid-Range Namesake?

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini review: Powered by a NovaThor dual-core processor that clocks 1 GHz, the S3’s mini version sports an Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean OS, 4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 1 GB RAM, 8 or 16 GB internal memory (expandable up to 32 GB), and a 5 MP primary camera. Judging from its initial specs, there is nothing really special about this handset. But when it comes to performance, design and display, does it have what it takes to be called the S3 Mini?

Although the Galaxy S3 Mini has been released last 2012, many people are still using the Galaxy S3. As a result, many are also looking for alternatives to the classic Galaxy titan. Therefore, it follows naturally that some people will turn to the mini version for a smaller and more portable option. But the question is: is this mid-range smartphone a wise decision?

Measuring 4.79 x 2.48 x 0.39 inches and weighing 111.5 grams, the S3 Mini shows a lot of promise. Its smaller size and lighter weight fits comfortably in one hand, while its over-all design has a premium pebble-like finish.

When it comes to its 4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, however, the S3 Mini has poor quality. It only features a low resolution of 480 x 800 pixels and a pixel density of 233 ppi. Still, engadget.com says, “What it lacks in pixel density, it makes up for in brightness and color representation.”

Another nagging downgrade of this handset is its weak 1GHz dual-core NovaThor processor which is nothing compared to S3’s quad-core Exynos chip. Although it is a given fact that most minis do have lower specs, many critics still thumbed down this handset because of its slow response time.

Those who are planning to buy it should also note that its Android Jelly Bean OS has not yet received any KitKat update.

There is also nothing surprising about the S3 Mini’s 5 MP primary camera. It can shoot fairly well with is autofocus and LED flash. However, don’t rely on the VGA front camera for selfies.

Overall, PCMAG’s verdict for the handset is: “The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S III Mini is a decent entry-level Android smartphone with an affordable price, but it doesn't come close to matching its full-sized namesake.”
