Studio Ghibli Museum Currently ‘Restructuring’, GM Says It’s Not Closing Down

Studio Ghibli is not entirely closing down but will be "taking a break" and undergo "restructuring" as what general manager and co-founder Toshio Suzuki said. This brief pause, hopefully, can shed light as to the future of the studio.

On a TV show, Suzuki explained the future of Studio Ghibli saying that it will still maintain its trademarks and copyrights but will downsize its staff. Reportedly, the studio will also take freelance projects like what they did before filming Porco Rosso. The Ghibli Museum in Tokyo will also be restored and maintained in its continued task to product advertisements and music videos.

This decision has been aired following the retirement of two giant directors/producers of the Studio, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata whose anime films give much income to the studio. Miyazaki gave the responsibility of being the studio's general manager when he retired last summer.

"On what to do with Studio Ghibli's future, it is by no means impossible to keep producing [movies] forever," he said. "However, we will take a brief pause to consider where to go from here." Suzuki said in Japanese during an interview in AnimeNewsNetwork.

Some of the studio's signature films include animes like the Oscar-nominated Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, and Howl's Moving Castle. However, despite their fame, the studio never denied reports that they are struggling financially with the decrease of income coming from their new movies. Though their new anime The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013) made 5.1 billion yen, but they fall short with the movie's production cost.

Studi Ghibli's most recent film and probably their last film, When Marnie Was There, were released on July 19 in Japan. It talks about the life of a sickly girl named Anna and her struggles to recuperate at a seaside town. While recuperating, she forged friendships with the mysterious, Marnie.

News on release dates of the movie for the US public is yet to be heard.
