A 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Movie Sequel Is In The Works; Will Jonathan Liebsman Direct 'Turtles' 2?

A "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie sequel is slated for release on June 3, 2016, but it is still not clear if Jonathan Liebsman will again direct the film.

Paramount picture has announced that it is going to begin developing a "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle" sequel, according to Cinema Blend.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" garnered $65-M plus in the box office on its opening weekend in the U.S.

The $125-M franchise reboot starring Megan Fox, produced by Michael Bay and directed by Jonathan Liebesman, was expected to open at around $40-$45m on its debut weekend but has surprisingly done better than expected, even with bad reviews and box office competition with "Guardians of the Galaxy."

"Launching a new take on the 'Turtles' into the feature film world was a daunting task because as fans of them ourselves, we felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the 'Turtles,' while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before," said Adam Goodman, president of Paramount's Film Group in a statement.

"The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story," the film executive added.

According to Deadline, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" has been doing well both in the matinees, which is usually the time of moviegoing families, and the evening to late-night showing, which caters mainly to the 25-to-35 demographic.

The anticipated "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" sequel will be produced by Michael Bay together with his Platinum Dunes partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, with Galen Walker and Scott Mednick.

Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec will come back to write the screenplay.

The date for the release of the second "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movie will come the same weekend as Sony's "Sausage Party" starring Jonah Hill/Seth Rogen and a week after the next "X-Men" installment from Fox and Disney Films' "Alice in Wonderland."
