Samsung Gear Solo Release Date: New Smartwatch Will Have Own Sim Card And Will Not Need Smartphone, To Be Released Alongside Galaxy Note 4 At IFA 2014 [PHOTO]

According to a new report, Samsung is preparing to launch yet the Samsung Gear Solo smartwatch at IFA 2014 next month. The smartwatch will launch alongside the Galaxy Note 4.

The Gear Solo will stand out a little from its siblings like the Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear 2 Neo, because it will feature its own cellular connectivity, meaning it doesn't have to be tethered to your smartphone.

The Gear Solo will be able to make and receive calls, texts and other communications independent of your smartphone.

Current watches, including the latest Android Wear devices like the Samsung Gear Live, have to be tethered to a smartphone via Bluetooth 4.0 LE to relay notifications and messages to the smartwatch.

Originally, the Gear Solo was tipped to be a South Korea exclusive, but this report suggests it will arrive for all markets just like the Note 4.

It's unclear whether the Gear Neo will come running on Samsung's Tizen OS, or on Google's Android Wear a la the Gear Live.

Samsung released the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo at this year's MWC, less than six months after their predecessor.

Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reports that Samsung intends to unveil the Gear Solo watch at the big IFA conference in September.

The report claims that Samsung is attempting to target outdoors and sporting enthusiasts that wish not to keep a phone handy, but remain connected to the world, and that the company hopes a lower-priced watchphone will be competitive with cheaper smartphones from rival companies.

More information will be reported as it becomes available.  Samsung already has an event planned for 3 September which is the expected release date the Galaxy Note 4. Don't be surprised if the Gear Solo also has a release date alongside it before IFA kicks off two days later.
