'Doom 4' Release Date, Beta, Trailer, Gameplay: Bethesda Talks About Resurrecting And Rebooting Franchise: Jet Packs And Double Jumps Seen In Quake Con Trailer [VIDEO]

Doom 4 is coming, here is everything currently known about the project. While no official release date, or even a time fram for a release date has been announced, the game has been unveiled, meaing they are at least past the half way point in development

PC Gamer reports that DOOM will be set on Mars and focuses on what made the series so memorable to begin with: old-school, fast-paced, run-and-gun shooting. Expect lots and lots of strafing, too. Executive Producer Marty Stratton also said that the game will run on id Tech 6, a new version of their game engine.

Also expect a lot more verticality with double jumps and jet packs being added to the game.

The arsenal's been beefed up too, and anyone who's played "Wolfenstein: The New Order" will appreciate the hulking weaponry. In fact "Wolfenstein: The New Order" has been a goal mark for the creators of "Doom 4" who see the other revamped franchise as a sign that "Doom 4" can be commercially sucessful.

Weapons aside, you'll also be able to finish enemies off with hand-to-hand finishing moves. Once the demons have taking a solid pasting, you'll be able to send them back to hell by ripping off jaws, stomping on skulls and tearing out hearts.

The game is being made by ID Software in conjunction with Bethesda.

The first hint of Doom 4 was actually given by former id Software technical director John Carmack back in 2007 at QuakeCon. It was officially announced the following year but has taken a while as it underwent an overhaul.

The critically-acclaimed, original Doom was released in 1993. The last Doom game, Doom 3, was released for Windows in 2004. A trailer was recently released for Doom 4, appearing to show the Mars landscape, with a voice talking about a "powerful technology with infinite possibilities." The voice adds that "instead, we let them in," referring to the demons that inhabit the "Doom" universe.

"We infused a holy union of flesh and metal. Now this brave new world has gone to Hell," the voice says.

At the same time, the clip shows what appears to be the Cyberdemon before it opens a door, which has the familiar "Doom" door opening noise. The Cyberdemon was a boss in the first "Doom" game in Episode 2 and were featured in later games.

However, Bethesda vice-president Peter Hines took heart from the successful launch and reception of "Wolfenstein: The New Order"

"Let's be honest, [Wolfenstein] was a bit of a tarnished brand," Hines said to MCV (via TotalXbox).

"And we knew that. The last couple of games were either 'ok' or 'not great'.

"It wasn't a franchise where people were desperate for the next one. Wolfenstein isn't Uncharted. We knew this would take some explaining.

"But developer Machine Games has now untarnished the IP," Hines added.

And with Doom 4, Bethesda "view(ed) that similarly to Wolfenstein" because "it's been so long since the last Doom game."

"We are going in as if we need to prove ourselves all over again," said Hines.

"We have no free passes. Nobody will assume this is going to be awesome.

"We are going to have to prove that this is something that's going to be fun and different that you need to pay attention to. That has to be our default position, we can't be: 'It's Doom, of course you're going to play it'.

"But that just makes us work harder," concluded Hines.

Check back often as we get closer to the  "Doom 4" release date, whenever that may be.
