Windows Phone 8.1 Release Date Arrives Earlier Than Expected For Lumia 720 In India, Lumia Cyan Update Keeps Aging Smartphone Relevant Once More

In spite uninspiring sales numbers, Microsoft still chooses to make an official Windows Phone 8.1 release date for most WP-powered phones on the planet. That includes Nokia's Lumia lineup.

The update has successfully arrived in some countries already such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and previous reports point to a release in India for the Nokia Lumia 720. However, a new report from Nokia Power User that the update is already available for download in the Asian country.

The Lumia 720 is a midranger announced by Nokia last year, and in this time and age, it is already aging thanks in part to new WP and Android-powered smartphones.

But with the arrival of the new update, we'll expect the Lumia 720 to be relevant again. In the report, the upgrades bring a ton of new features and options for all Windows Phones loyalists to enjoy.

Some added features include a more customizable homescreen, Internet Explorer 11, a notification center that can be accessed by pulling down, much like how the notifications are accessed in Android, and an option to place a new layer of live tiles in the homescreen.

Unfortunately, there were reports that the highly-touted voice assistant which is Cortana is still non-existent in this version of Windows Phone 8.1.

Meanwhile, the Lumia Cyan update is a version of the WP 8.1 that is exclusive to Nokia Lumia handsets. In the report, the Lumia 720 will now allow users to save and download games and apps in the phone's microSD storage.

The Windows Phone mobile platform is fighting a losing battle against iOS and Android, in spite all of the praises it has received for the 8.1 update. Even its flagship device, the Nokia Lumia 930 is a stellar device which should be at par with the best in the market nowadays.

Still, no solid results have emerged. We'll see in the coming months what Microsoft will do.
