Demi Lovato Speaks About Her Bipolar Disorder; Announces Mental Health And Listening Engagement Tour

Demi Lovato has been very open in speaking about having bipolar disorder and takes raising mental health awareness to a new level by announcing that she is joining The Mental Health Listening and Engagement Tour.

The 21-year-old singer openly admits to having a mental condition on the video, saying, "I'm Devi Lovato. I'm a recording artist, author, songwriter and actress. I'm also living with bipolar disorder."

According to a report by Billboard, Demi Lovato spoke about having bipolar disorder in a public service announcement video, in which the pop singer explained, "Bipolar depression really got my life off track, but today I'm proud to say I am living proof that someone can live, love, and be well with bipolar disorder when they get the education, support and treatment they need."

"Through my music tours, you've seen me speak out against the shame and silence around mental illness," Demi Lovato continued about her bipolar disorder.

"Now I've started to bring my mental health advocacy to a new level. I want to shine a light on people out there who, like me, are learning to live well with mental illness by getting the right diagnosis and the right treatment plan," she said.

In an interview with People in 2011, Lovato revealed her struggle with her mental illness.

"I never found out until I went into treatment that I was bipolar," the "Heart Attack" singer said on the interview. "Looking back it makes sense. There were times when I was so manic, I was writing seven songs in one night and I'd be up until 5:30 in the morning." She also mentioned that she has "battled depression from a very young age."

Since her revelation, Lovato has been open about her struggles with eating disorders and self-mutilation. "I feel like I am in control now where my whole life I wasn't in control," she said.

According to an article by Bustle, Lovato was not only open about her mental condition but as well as her dad's. "I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. I've dealt with mental illnesses, but my father also dealt with mental illness and he was not able to function very well in society."

Lovato also launched "The Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program," in which she will help people struggling with mental illness to pay for their treatment, one person at a time.
