2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions: Greg Monroe To Lakers Or Knicks In 2015? Disgruntled Center Takes Pay Cut To Gain Freedom From Detroit!

The 2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions are about to finalize, and Greg Monroe is pretty much off the table. He is certain to take the qualifying offer-a high risk, high reward move that very few restricted free agents take. This is his way to turn the tables on his team and control his destiny next year. Teams like the Lakers and Knicks are already targeting him.

The qualifying offer is the only way a restricted free agent can wrest control of his destiny from his mother team. It will make take away the 'restriction' after the end of the season and he can also veto any trade that involves him. The downside is that the player will take a price below market value for one season and has no security in case he gets injured in that time frame.

Monroe is willing to take that risk because he already has his mind set on leaving the Pistons. From the Washington Post:

"Monroe and his agent, David Falk, never sought an offer sheet from another team but pursued sign-and-trade proposals with at least five other teams, including Portland and Oklahoma City, according to person familiar with the discussions. Monroe denied receiving a reported five-year, $60 million offer - or anything close - from Pistons and would've been unlikely to accept either way.

The durable Monroe has only missed three games his entire career but would have no security in case of injury. That is the one valid danger of this decision. But Monroe appears to be eager to leave, no matter what."

The logjam at the frontline is the major cause of Monroe's frustration. His teammate and frontcourt partner Andre Drummond called him out to stay, but it's the situation with Josh Smith that he is wary about.

There are numerous teams that will have cap space to sign Monroe next season. These were the teams who were positioning themselves to grab quality big men like Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge and Marc Gasol. Love and Aldridge are likely off the table so Monroe will likely be the target of a team ready to splurge. These teams include the New York Knicks and the LA Lakers.

There is a big chance that playing for one of those teams is Monroe's long term goal. He doesn't really have to prove himself. All he has to do is stay healthy and play out the season.
