‘Halt And Catch Fire’ Renewed By AMC Despite Ratings Conundrum

Things looked grim through its first season but AMC has announced that it will keep "Halt and Catch Fire" for a second season. Seems the showrunners managed to hit the ESC key on cancelation.

As The Hollywood Reporter states, "the series opened to rave reviews, but just 1.2 million total viewers after an aggressive online and on-demand sampling effort that saw the series become the first show to premiere on Tumblr." The ratings afterward ended up being lower than the last two AMC shows to be canceled, which left "Halt and Catch Fire" fans wondering if the show would make it to a second season.

Part of the problem may have been the airing time. As reported by The Wrap, "The show is earning every viewer it catches. For most of its episodes so far, it's had to grab them while airing against some of the toughest competition on television, HBO's 'Game of Thrones.'"

Speaking of competition from HBO, the powerhouse subscription network also had a show about the same subject matter of the people behind the technological industry, only it's a comedy. "Silicon Valley" is nominated for "Best Comedy" in the upcoming Emmys.

Nevertheless, AMC president Charlie Collier stands behind the series, stating that, "We have a history of demonstrating patience through the early seasons of new shows, betting on talent and building audience over time. We see that opportunity here and look forward to a second season."

AMC has a host of other shows to look forward to in 2015, including the much talked about "Breaking Bad" spinoff  "Better Call Saul." But as The Wrap predicted, "With 'Breaking Bad' gone and 'Mad Men' ending next year, it needs another show to pull in Emmys."

Overall, it's good news for "Halt and Catch Fire" fans. They can expect to see the second season of ten episodes next year in August.
