Box Office Predictions: Could Teen Starlet Chloe Grace Moretz Tearjerk Fans Into Seeing 'If I Stay' Over 'Sin City' Sequel?

This weekend at the movie theaters, audiences may have a tough time choosing a film. The forecast based on social media analysis has pegged "Kick-Ass" actress Chloe Moretz to carry her new tearjerker "If I Stay" into the top film spot over star-studded ensemble action flick, "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For."

While this summer has been overall disappointing in box office numbers, August pulled the film industry into an unexpected spike with the success of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." Heading into this weekend, Box Office Mojo predicts, "opening at over 2,500 locations, 'If I Stay' could wind up in first place ahead of Sin City. The 2009 Gayle Forman book upon which its based isn't nearly as popular as 'The Fault in our Stars', though the movie still seems poised to tap in to some of 'Fault's' audience."

"If I Stay" stars breakout "Kick Ass" teen actress Chloe Grace Moretz, who has continued to gain fans with her quirky style since her debut. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "The actress plays Mia, a 17-year-old cello prodigy with dreams of Juilliard and a slightly older musician boyfriend named Adam (Jamie Blackley), who's often on the road with his band. A car accident leaves Mia, her bohemian parents (Mireille Enos and Joshua Leonard) and younger brother (Jakob Davies) comatose, and most of If I Stay alternates between an out-of-body Mia racing around the hospital and flashbacks to her time with Adam."

The early critics reviews of "If I Stay" do not lend to the box office predictions. The Wall Street Journal states, "the production as a whole is awfully clumsy, and Ms. Moretz, who is only 17, needs more help than she gets from the first-time feature director, R.J. Cutler." But perhaps it won't matter for teen audiences who can identify with the emotional plight of the protagonist and those around her.

This weekend will prove interesting as the female and male driven films face off in the theaters. One shouldn't be surprised though if audiences choose not to see either "If I Stay" nor the "Sin City" sequel and instead choose to see "Guardians of the Galaxy" again.
