For most Android and smmartphones fans, getting a high-end Samsung smartphone is certainly one of those dreams which seem very unlikely, especially for a manufacturer such as Samsung who do not need to reinvent itself in order to get decent sales. 

It's the second top selling smartphone vendor in the world, so there must be nothing wrong with plastic phones. 

Fortunately, its biggest rival, Apple will launch its first ever iPhone whose screen will go beyond 4 inches. Getting a 4.7-inch display, the upcoming iPhone 6 is by all means a direct competitor to Android's supremacy in the big screen category. 

But it is also a direct attack on Samsung. 

Now that Samsung's position as the best big smartphone manufacturer is threatened by the 4.7-inch iPhone, the concept of the Galaxy Alpha is born. 

The main selling point of the Galaxy Alpha is its metal frame. While it still gets a polycarbonate plastic cover, the metal frame gives it more character and a sense of style that no other Galaxy handset has done before. 

Running inside the Galaxy Alpha is a 2GB RAM, an Exynos 5 Octa chipset with eight cores (four Cortex-A15 cores (1.8GHz) and four Cortex-A7 cores (1.3GHz), and a 32GB built-in memory which follows the iPhone's lead of not having a microSD card slot. 

The phone's dimensions are pretty similar to the upcoming iPhone 6, measuring 132.4 x 65.5 and weighs 115g. It packs a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display with HD (1280 x 720) resolution. 

Also on board is a 12MP rear-facing camera and a 2.1MP front cam for selfies. Interestingly, the Galaxy Alpha gets some of the Galaxy S5's features such as heart-rate monitor and fingerprint scanner. 

As with the model name, the Alpha could only be the first of Samsung's new lineup of metal-clad smartphones in the coming years. But they have to see first how it holds up against the likes of the iPhone 6.
