"If I Stay" lead the box office this Friday at the movies, successfully fighting off a dismal opening for "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For." The box office giant this weekend however is still "Guardians of the Galaxy," which is expected to surpass "Transformers: Age of Distinction" by Sunday and become this summer's highest grossing film.

After the surprising success of teen tearjerker "The Fault In Our Stars" it looks like audiences still enjoy a good cry. "If I Stay," despite a lukewarm critics response, drew in a solid $6.83 million. Box Office Mojo reports, "That's above 'Charlie St. Cloud' ($5.6 million) and last weekend's 'The Giver' ($4.75 million). If it plays like 'The Fault In Our Stars', it will finish the weekend with less than $13 million; a more likely outcome is a pattern similar to 'Divergent', which would put it at just over $16 million." These results are definitely good news for budding teen actress Chloe Grace Moretz, who can now use the film as evidence of her ability to draw a crowd.

As for "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For," not even an already existing comic book fan base nor star-studded cast could draw in crowds for a decent opening. Variety states that, "The retro-noir, budgeted between $60 million and $70 million, came in sixth on Friday behind the sports drama "When the Game Stands Tall," with $2.6 million. It's on track for dismal $7 million this weekend - less than half the $15 million projected sum."

The real star this weekend however is still "Guardians of the Galaxy." Marvel can rejoice as the film is expected to finally surpass "Transformers: Age of Extinction" for this summer's top spot by Sunday. It passed the $200 million mark last weekend, and stands to make it to $252 million by the end of this weekend. Overall, it looks like the Marvel comic book fanbase will continue to drive summer box office numbers.
