Beijing Independent Film Festival 2014 Is A No-Go; Chinese Authoritites Shut Down Event

Beijing Independent Film Festival 2014 will not push through as Chinese authorities went to the venue and reportedly shut it down on Saturday.

According to the Associated Press, authorities came to the Beijing Independent Film Festival 2014 and took documents and films from the organizers, and even went as far as "hauling away two event officials."

The two officials, Li Xianting, the organizer of Beijing Independent Film Festival 2014, and Wang Hongwei, the festival's artistic director were arrested by the police but was later released.

It appears that Beijing is being under tighter control as police police came to Li Xanting's office unannounced and confiscated things which had been in his possession for over 10 years.

"In the past few years, when they forced us to cancel the festival, we just moved it to other places, or delayed the screenings," Wang said. "But this year, we cannot carry on with the festival. It is completely forbidden.

The festival was supposed to have its 8th run this year, but it appears that the government had ordered stricter control and have succeeded.

"It's very clear the the [President] Xi Jinping regime is determined to control the ideological realm, which has not been emphasized so much for a long time," said Chris Berry, a professor at King's College London.

The festival, which was slated to take place in the suburb of Songzhuang, was cancelled and left festival-goers and participants upset.

"The audience for my films is already quite small, perhaps because I make documentaries that talk about history," said Hu Jie, a director based in Nanjing. "If one of the rare film festivals, like the Beijing Independent Film festival, is shut down, then it will be very difficult for us to survive as filmmakers."

Apart from the physical presence of police forces in the venue of the festival as well as in nearby areas and the alleged arrests of some of the organizers, electricity was also reportedly cut off, prompting the organizers to cancel the event.
