'Gears of War 4' Release Date, Earlier Reports Of Release Date Came From Hacked Account, Rod Fergusson Of Black Tusk Studios Says Game Is Still In Prototype Phase [PHOTO]

"Gears of War 4" release date earlier reported was a fake. Get all the "Gears of War 4" news here.

Rumors claiming that Gears of War 4 would be arriving in early 2015, claimed that the game would be 1080p and 60fps, among other "details" were all faked from a hack. In fact "Gears of War 4" is still in its infancy.

On August 13, a page on the official Xbox Twitch channel showed up with the words "gow_repercussion," and "embargo 11/7/14," which seemed to suggest that the upcoming Gears of War game would be titled "Repercussion" and is set for a November 7, 2014 release.

Although it was presumed that a major Microsoft leak had taken place, it was later revealed by Polygon that the Twitch profiles for Xbox, PlayStation, and the eSports League (ESL) were hacked by a third party.

Twitch informed Polygon that they believe that the accounts were compromised at Gamescom2014, and have since deleted the posts.

Microsoft has yet to officially announce a release date for "Gears of War 4," and based on where the game is at, it would be impossible for its release date to be in 2015.

In an interview, Fergusson says that he will return to the "core essence" of the Gears series, and they might look to expand on current Gears lore to drive the series forward.

"There's lots of stuff, backstory from the E Day, Pendulum Wars all the way to Gears 3, there's a lot of room in there," he said.

"But I don't know if that's the place to go.

"I think there's lots of other places to go as well"

More recently, Xbox exec Aaron Greenberg wrote of his recent trip to the studio, claiming he was "very impressed" with what he saw at Black Tusk. He reports on Twitter that he left feeling "very impressed" with what he saw.

In a webcast Fergusson said, "I can't go into a lot of depth about a lot of things. This isn't going to be the place where I announce the name of the next game and all these sorts of things. Obviously it's going to take some time to get to a point where we can do some stuff like that."

Lester Speight, who plays Cole Train, also managed to mislead fans by accident.

"@MistaPeerez: @lesterspeight have you gotten a call about a new gears? You have to reprise your role! #whoobaby" "Yup!"

- Lester Speight (@lesterspeight) July 4, 2014

However, Train quickly denied that he was formally contacted by anyone from "Gears of War 4," and that his tweet was just misinterpreted, all he was saying is that he was willing to do it.

So in short, all we know is that Microsoft has bought the "Gears of War" IP and that Black Tusk Studios is working on it, but the game is very early on in development, and we know nothing else, especially not a release date.
