Amazon Buys Twitch; Tech Giant Spends Nearly $1 Billion On The Gaming Website

Amazon buys Twitch and the tech giant's offer appears to be hard to resist at $970 million.

Contrary to rumors reporting that Google was preparing to acquire the platform, Amazon buys Twitch, which is a gaming website that hosts live streams of people playing video games.

According to CNN Money, as Amazon buys Twitch, advertisers will soon see it as a viable platform to invest on.

In a report on Billboard magazine, Twitch is said to have a large viewership, with 55 million unique visitors per month and that there is an abundance of content to be livestreamed on the website adding up to a total of 15 billion minutes.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the website (Twitch) reportedly has a cult following, making it the fourth most visited website, following web giants Netflix, Google and Apple.

"Broadcasting and watching gameplay is a global phenomenon and Twitch has built a platform that brings together tens of millions of people who watch billions of minutes of games each month - from 'The International,' to breaking the world record for 'Mario,' to gaming conferences like 'E3,'" explained Amazon's CEO and founder Jeff Bezos. "And amazingly, Twitch is only three years old. Like Twitch, we obsess over customers and like to think differently, and we look forward to learning from them and helping them move even faster to build new services for the gaming community."

It appears that some changes will ensue from the acquisition and Twitch CEO Emmett Shear hopes they are all for the better.

"We chose Amazon because they believe in our community, they share our values and long-term vision, and they want ot help us get there faster," said Shear in a statement. "We're keeping most everything the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly: our independence. But with Amazon's support we'll have the resources to bring you an even better Twitch."

Twitch reportedly started around seven years ago as Justin.tv and evolved into what it is now - a gaming platform with 1 million shared videos and its services offered via online streams and consoles.
