Gwen Stefani VS Stephen Colbert: 'No Doubt' Singer Tries To Play It Off While 'The Colbert Report' Host Plays It Up?

At the 66th Primetime Emmys, the night was mostly short of excitement in terms of scandal and gossip. That was until "No Doubt" singer and fashion icon Gwen Stefani accidentally mispronounced Colbert in her presentation of the award for Best Variety Series. Both celebs are making light of the situation, but it does seem that the jokes are escalating.

According to U.S. Weekly (who also posted footage from the event) "After presenting the nominees, Stefani opened the envelope, saying, "And the Emmy goes to..." Rather than the correct pronunciation of The Colbert Report, Stefani awarded the honor to "The Colbore Report."

Stephen Colbert, classy as ever, didn't initially seem bothered by the mispronunciation. Instead he decided to embrace it by stating, "'(She's) evidently not a huge fan of the show. But I'm a huge fan of hers. I want to get her abs. That's what I aspire to," The Daily Mail reported.

The escalation of the funny and somewhat awkward situation started last night when Gwen Stefani made fun of herself at the final episode of "Chelsea Lately." Stefani introduced "Chelsea Hammer" in the opening number, causing the audience to erupt in laughter. Making fun of herself seems like a sign that the "Hollaback Girl" artist wanted to make light of the embarrassing situation.

In a similar fashion, "The Colbert Report" and their leader Stephen Colbert, also decided to extend the joke into the next evening. Deadline reports that while there's no original content this week, the opening credits have been changed and now titles the show, "The Colbore Report." They speculate that the slight adjustment to the mispronunciation is poking fun at not only Stefani's lack of familiarity with the show but also an editorial comment on the show being boring.

But once you extend a joke, how far is too far?

It seems to be all good fun on the surface for Gwen Stefani and Stephen Colbert but as with any joke that gets extended, you always run the risk of it going too far. Hopefully, not very in this case.
