Team USA Basketball Lucky To Have ‘Easy’ Group! Coach K Calls It ‘Another Training Camp! Free Throws A Weakness For The Americans?

Team USA Basketball has a weakened team, but they still went undefeated and hardly bothered in all their tune up games. They expect most of the same when they march into pool play in Group C.

Team USA had a stroke of luck in the draw. They were assigned to Group C where they play Turkey, New Zealand, Dominican Republic and Ukraine. Their opener is against Finland. None of these teams are feared basketball powers.

The only hitch is that they play 5 games in the span of 6 days-but all the teams have the same grueling schedule and Team USA rotation is deep.

While Coach K told ESPN: "I think we still have to get ready in pool play. We think that pool play is gonna be very important" he did admit that it could serve as their pseudo training camp and a chance to test more rotations.

Rudy Gay, who got a late invitation to the camp after Kevin Durant's departure says: "Until we get a rhythm, we have to play defense and make our defense produce points. ... Our continuity on offense isn't really there yet. [But] as long as we go out there and play defense, we'll be fine."

Team USA is far from a perfect team though. In a tune up game against Goran Dragic and Slovenia, they got exposed to a possible weakness.

Forward Kenneth Faried admitted: "We really struggled from the free throw line. There is such a thing as too loose and we were. Guys were kind of just rushing their shot a little bit, not using their technique. [Then] when we tried to use technique, we were still kind of just missing."

If they get in a bind with Spain or Lithuania later in the tournament, that can be a factor especially since smart basketball programs from Europe often exploit that weakness.
Derrick Rose is not bothered, though:  "Those free throws can easily be fixed, so we're not worried about that."
