Maze Runner Movie News: Will Cast ‘Teen Wolf’ Dylan O'Brien Make Book Adaptation More Successful Than ‘Hunger Games’ Or ‘Twilight’?

"Maze Runner" may be on track to compete with franchises like "Hunger Games" and "Twilight," thanks to its lead, "Teen Wolf" star Dylan O'Brien. Can the "Maze Runner" movie, which is adapted from the book by James Dashner, compete with the other immensely popular movie franchises?

According to Variety, the "Maze Runner" movie "is on track for a $30 million opening" when it premieres on September 19.

This surprising success (especially considering the US box office is having "its worst summer in nearly a decade") comes from both males and females wanting to see "Maze Runner."

Other similar YA book adaptations like "Hunger Games" and "Twilight" drew in hordes of female audiences but not nearly as many males.

Variety reports that "Maze Runner" is more appealing to both genders; the movie is about "a boy whose memory is erased and must try to escape from a maze in which he finds himself trapped."

The storyline "offering a sci-fi storyline" could have a "potential male appeal." The $30 million-budgeted project is currently a "first choice" among men under the age of 25, Variety reports.

It also helps that "Teen Wolf" star Dylan O'Brien plays the lead in "Maze Runner." The young actor will draw multitudes of fans to the box office.
Another fun draw of "Maze Runner"? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will be shown with Escape, a three-screen digital panoramic setup that audiences will be able to experience for the first time.

EW reports that Escape theaters in the U.S. include the Cinemark 18 & XD at the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center in Los Angeles; Cinemark Paradise 24 & XD in Davie, Fla.; Cinemark West Plano & XD in Plano, Texas; Cinemark @ Seven Bridges and Imax in Woodridge, Ill.; and Cinemark's Redwood Downtown & XD in Redwood City, Calif. Ticket prices, the report says, will be determined by individual theaters.
