Weekend Box Office Update: 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Becomes Number One Film This Year Over 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', Promising Opening For 'As Above, So Below'

The final numbers for this summer's blockbuster releases are coming in and "Guardians of the Galaxy" has become not only king of the summer, but also the highest grossing film domestically this year. Otherwise, this final summer box office weekend will conclude with subpar performances from Pierce Brosnan's "November Man" and a surprising number two opening for the horror film "As Above, So Below."

Box Office Mojo reports, "Against two weak newcomers, "Guardians of the Galaxy" held on to first place at the box office on Friday. More importantly, ‘Guardians' passed "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" to become the highest-grossing movie of the year at the domestic box office with $262.1 million. Guardians added $3.8 million on Friday, which is down just 20 percent from last weekend. That puts it on pace for around $16 million for the three-day frame and over $20 million for the four-day holiday weekend."

Overall, it looks like this year is going to belong to Marvel. So far the top two grossing films of the year have come from the comic book studio. Outside of Marvel and in terms of this summer's final weekend openers, the only slightly surprising result was for the horror film "As Above, So Below."

According to Variety, "This weekend's other new wide release, "As Above, So Below," grossed $3.2 million on Friday. The first film from Universal's distribution pact with Legendary, "As Above, So Below" will likely earn around $11.3 million this long weekend. The thriller about archaeologists in search of a lost treasure in the Paris catacombs cost a mere $5 million to produce." The film landed in second place on Friday and given it's low budget, Legendary can probably call it a win on their part.

With only Oscar-bait, holiday themed films, and a few straggling blockbusters to show up in the next few months, it's probably fair to call "Guardians of the Galaxy" the highest grossing film of 2014. This result solidifies that comic book films aren't going anywhere anytime soon - especially Marvel films.
