2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions: Ray Allen To San Antonio? Defending Champions Can't Get Enough Shooters! Spurs Are Allen's Best Bet For Title?

The 2014 NBA Free Agency Rumors & Predictions headliner is Ray Alllen. After declaring that he'll play for a contender, no less than three contenders are vying for his services. There's former teammate LeBron James, former coach Doc Rivers and now the San Antonio Spurs!

The report from ESPN:

"League sources told ESPN.com this week that the Spurs and Clippers have emerged as two more rivals for the Cleveland Cavaliers to worry about as the Cavs continue to try to lure Allen away from the Miami Heat.

Clippers coach Doc Rivers is a natural Allen recruiter after coaching him in Boston. Despite possessing very limited financial flexibility, the Clippers have only 11 players under contract and certainly could use a shooter of Allen's caliber.

The Spurs, meanwhile, have only one open roster spot at the moment. As ESPN.com reported Friday, they have also registered interest in Mexico star center Gustavo Ayon while remaining hopeful of re-signing reserve center Aron Baynes, whom Australia is relying on heavily at the FIBA World Cup in Spain with Andrew Bogut absent."

The Spurs are the reigning champions but their dynasty was not built by resting on their laurels. With a new legitimate threat in Cleveland, the Spurs know they need to step up.

Ray Allen could fit right in with Coach of the Year Gregg Popovich's style. He will also benefit from Pop's expertise in resting his veterans as he has extended the shelf life of players Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan.

The Spurs rely heavily on three point shooting to space the floor. Allen has become a great spot up shooter as he moves from screens and gets the pass at the right spot-exactly how Pop's system works.

It's a dilemma most players want to have. Allen has worked 17 years to get to this point, and now he's taking his own sweet time.

The NBA's all-time best shooter says: "It's August and I don't want to rush to judgment. I want to get to September and see how I really feel."
