The Brittany Murphy Story Premieres on Lifetime, September 6; Brittany Murphy’s Father Says Lifetime’s Unauthorized Biopic Mocks The Late Actress

The Brittany Murphy Story will make its worldwide premiere Saturday, Sept. 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime. The network says the biopic tells "the real-life story of the ambitious and talented actress - who rose to fame quickly, but succumbed much too young to the dark side of Hollywood." Brittany Murphy's father, Angelo Bertolotti, says he is "disgusted" with the "trashy" project.

Brittany Murphy's father told The Examiner  "I am disgusted and outraged that Lifetime decided to produce such a trashy project, defiling the memory of my beautiful, talented daughter, Brittany Murphy. Frankly, I am amazed at their audacity of calling it "a true story," without conducting any research or consulting with any members of the family. 'The Brittany Murphy Story' is an affront to everything my daughter was in real life. It's hideous, unauthorized and completely untrue."

The Lifetime press release said "Quickly landing a breakout role in the '90s hit Clueless, the 17-year-old continued her rapid climb to fame, working with some of Hollywood's biggest stars in such high-profile hits as Girl, Interrupted (with Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder), Don't Say a Word (with Michael Douglas) and 8 Mile (with Eminem and Kim Basinger), among others. With a personal life equally as glamorous, Brittany dated leading men like Ashton Kutcher (Adam Hagenbuch, The Perks of Being a Wallflower), before settling down to marry British screenwriter Simon Monjack (Eric Petersen, Kirstie, the upcoming Naughty and Nice). But relentless rumors, media glare and merciless pursuit by paparazzi - coupled with insecurities about her appearance and an underlying desperation for approval - wreaked havoc and took an enormous toll on Brittany's fragile psyche."

The Brittany Murphy Story was produced by MarVista Entertainment. Lifetime says the film "follows the actress (Amanda Fuller, Cheap Thrills, Grey's Anatomy, Last Man Standing) and her mother, Sharon (Sherilyn Fenn, Magic City, Boxing Helena, Of Mice and Men, Twin Peaks), as they gamble everything in a move to Hollywood, determined to make young Brittany a star."

Bertolotti told the Examiner "Lifetime's casting was atrocious. Amanda Fuller, the girl playing Brittany, looks absolutely nothing like her. Everyone looks ridiculous in their bad wigs and the dialogue is nauseating. To suggest that I was never in Brittany's life since the age of 2 is absolutely despicable. I was always a part of Brittany's life and supported both her and her mother. Anyone who thinks that Sharon and Brittany could afford to move from New Jersey to California by selling Tupperware should have their heads examined. The media loves to throw "mob ties" into the equation, but that lifestyle is exactly what attracted Sharon in the first place. She worked in one of my clubs, until we got married. From that point on, she was well taken care of, along with Brittany and never had to work another day in her life."
